Our embassy
The Embassy in Brasilia is the main British diplomatic mission in Brazil. Located in the capital of the country, it is responsible for all aspects of the bilateral relationship with Brazil.
Located at Setor de Embaixadas Sul, Quadra 801, the Embassy is close to offices of the Brazilian federal Government (Presidency and Ministries) and to the American, French and Australian Embassies.
Under Ambassador Alan Charlton's leadership, the Embassy has a staff of more than 60 professionals - among them, British and local employees - who work in the following areas: government to government relations, consular assistance, commercial relations and project development in association with Brazilian institutions.
A little bit of history…
The capital of Brazil was transferred from Rio de Janeiro to Brasília in 1960, but the embassy and the British Ambassador stayed in Rio. A building for staff and a temporary Embassy headquarters in Brasilia only started to be constructed in 1966. Learn more about the construction of the Embassy headquarters.
In 1972, a British office, with Embassy status, opened under the leadership of a First Secretary. The Ambassador stayed in Rio de Janeiro and led the diplomatic mission from there.
However, in 1973, the Brazilian Government instructed all Embassies to be transferred to Brasilia. The Embassy in Rio de Janeiro was shut and the Ambassador left the "Marvellous City" and moved to Brasilia.
