How we can help

"Better World, Better Britain"

The FCO – Foreign and Commonwealth Office launched its new Mission and Strategic Framework in February 2008. The mission statement for British diplomacy has hence become Better World, Better Britain.

The new mission reflects the fact that, in an interdependent world, we can no longer have environmental, physical or economic security in the UK without promoting the same all over the world. A better world will help build a better United Kingdom.

The British Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro is dedicated to the following Foreign and Commonwealth Office essential services: assist British nationals abroad, support managed migration to Britain, and promotion of a high growth, low carbon economy.

The Consulate-General’s consular responsibilities cover the states of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Pernambuco (including the island of Fernando de Noronha), Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Piauí and Maranhão. There are Honorary Consuls in Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Recife, Vitória and Fortaleza, plus a Consular Agent, to be upgraded to an Honorary Consul post in the near future, in Natal.

How we can help

Assist British nationals in Brazil

The Consulate General co-ordinates the Foreign and Commonwealth's consular network in Brazil aiming to assist British nationals throughout the country. The Consulate General is also the main UK passport-issuing hub for Brazil (and Bolivia), and offers a range of other documentary services, such as UK Birth and Death certificate registrations, and notarial services (e.g. consular certificates to help British citizens pursue their residence applications with the Brazilian authorities).

Find out more about the Consular services offered to British nationals travelling or living in Brazil by visiting "Help for British Nationals" and "Passports".

The Consulate General also maintains a database of British nationals in Brazil who register with us, so that they are able to stay in touch with the British community in crisis situations. To register on-line with the British Consulate General, please visit the LOCATE website.

Visa services

Any Brazilian citizen requiring a UK visa should contact our commercial partner WorldBridge. Information on how to apply for a visa can also be obtained by calling WorldBridge’s pay phone service on (21) 2108 9108 at a cost of US$12 per call. WorldBridge acts as a facilitation service and cannot influence the outcome of any visa application. Entry Clearance Officers from the UK Border Agency have sole responsibility for deciding the outcome of visa applications.

Trade and Investment

The Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro aims to increase the flow of UK trade with Brazil and Brazilian inward investment into the UK, mainly in oil and gas, life sciences, renewables, mining, sports and infrastructure sectors. For more information about our UK Trade & Investment team in Brazil and the commercial services we provide to Brazilian and British companies see the Business and Investment pages.

The Consulate General cannot answer lifestyle enquiries (e.g. requests for assistance with the practicalities of living in Brazil), but it can show you the right direction. Send your enquiries via e-mail to: contato@reinounido.org.br
