Disabled access
The British Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro is keen to ensure that our building and services offered to visitors are accessible to disabled members of the public.
However, due to security reasons and other restrictions, easy access for disabled people is not always available. We therefore ask you to inform our Reception in advance if you will require special attendance, tel: (21) 2555 9600. See opening times and contact details.
Access to the building
The British Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro is located on the second floor of a residential building in Flamengo. There are six steps leading to the main entrance of the building, and there is no ramp available to gain wheelchair access. Special access may be made through the service entrance of the building. For security and practical reasons, we ask visitors to inform us in advance of any special needs. The main entrance has two lifts which can take visitors to the second floor. The access doors are not automatic but they are accessible for wheelchairs.
Inside the Consulate there are waiting rooms for Commercial and Consular visitors. Both rooms are comfortable and with good lighting, but there are no specially adapted toilet facilities for visitors with special needs or toilets for public use.
A car parking service is not available. During office hours it is difficult to find parking spaces in the vicinity of the Consulate.
Visually impaired visitors who plan to visit the Consulate accompanied by a trained guide dog will need to inform the Consulate in advance of his or her visit. This is for security reasons. During the visit a member of our staff will escort the visitor.
Visitors with a hearing disability and those who communicate using sign language may visit the Consulate accompanied by an interpreter.
Whenever necessary, Consulate staff will be available to help visitors with special needs.
