Investment from Brazil into London triples (06/11/2009)

BNDES, the Brazilian development bank, is joining a growing number of Brazilian companies to establish their European headquarters in London, with the help of Think London, the foreign direct investment agency for the UK’s capital.

Michael Charlton, Chief Executive of Think London, said: “An increasing number of Brazilian companies from a wide variety of sectors use the buoyant economy of their domestic market to globalise and to take full advantage of the window of investment opportunity that the current downturn has created in London. This year, the number of Brazilian companies setting up a presence in London has tripled compared to two years ago. The enormous momentum of Brazilian companies going global is a great chance for Think London to tap into this growing economy which has all the potential of China and India.”

Think London has an established track record in assisting Brazilian companies to set up or expand in London, with notable examples including BWI Development, Banco Bradesco, Dabi Atlante, and Alpargatas (Havaianas).

The President of Brazil’s visit to London this week highlights the importance of the UK as a business destination for Brazilian companies, coupled with London recently being named as the top European destination for overseas investors; the city clearly remains a global hub for international business.

Charlton continued: “Following on from Rio’s success in securing the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, we strongly believe this will lead to a new era of partnership between Brazil and London, the host of the 2012 Games, and we look forward to welcoming further investment from South America over the next year.”
