Prime Minister outlines plan for ongoing economic recovery (13/10/2009)
The Prime Minister has outlined his plan for ongoing economic recovery in the UK, saying growth and a sensible deficit-reduction plan will be crucial to paying down debt in the years ahead.
During a discussion with economic commentators at Bloomberg in the City of London, Gordon Brown warned that despite positive economic signals, the recovery to date was fragile.
He said the Government will move to ensure long-term recovery by introducing a range of measures, including the release of detailed tax measures, clamping down on tax havens and tax avoidance, and a sale of government assets.
Mr Brown said Britain is one of only three countries in the G7 so far to set out plans to halve its deficit over four years.
He said in order to ensure the British economy continues to grow, the Government will focus on investing in skills and training to allow the UK to continue to compete in high-value industries.
“This is a strategy that needs government working with markets and individuals to make sure that we can take the benefits of the opportunities that will undoubtedly exist in a global economy that expands over the next few years.”
The PM warned that major risks to the international and domestic economic recovery remain, and extreme care will be required over the coming months.
On trade, Mr Brown said the world must continue to resist creeping protectionism and he said he will work to avoid a premature ending of the monetary and fiscal policies.
