How to register the death of a British national in Brazil – if you are resident in Brazil
You can register the death at the British Consulate in Rio de Janeiro. Consular death registration is not a legal requirement but there are some benefits:
- An entry will be made in the death register by the British Consulate, Rio de Janeiro.
- You will be provided with a British style death certificate.
- A record of the death will be held by the General Register Office in the UK.
You will need to register the death with the Brazilian civil authorities and obtain a full Brazilian death certificate before you can apply for consular death registration. The consular death certificate will not include a cause of death as many foreign death certificates do not include this detail. You can apply for a consular death certificate at the British Consulate in Rio de Janeiro.
To register a death please send to the British Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro:
- the form Death registration form (PDF, 19KB) and the documents listed on the Death registration form checklist
- a completed credit card payment authorisation form with all applicant and cardholder details, together with a copy of any identification that contains a signature (e.g. a passport, driving license, etc.) if the applicant and cardholder are not the same person. We do not accept any other form of payment for postal applications.
