How to register the birth of a British national in Brazil – if you are resident in Brazil
You may apply for a Consular birth registration through the British Consulate, Rio de Janeiro. You do not have to. But the advantages are that you will be given a UK style birth certificate, the birth will be registered with the UK General Register Office as well the British Consulate, Rio de Janeiro, and you will be able to obtain certified copies of the Birth certificate in the future from General Registry Office and British Consulate, Rio de Janeiro.

Please note that you will need to register the birth with the local civil authorities and obtain a local birth certificate from them first.
Please also note that we are unable to register a birth if the parents were born overseas and are only British by descent. Nor can we register the birth of a non-British child who has been adopted by British parents.

How long does it take?
We aim to process all Birth registration applications within 5 working days of receiving correctly completed applications forms, information, and fee (excluding any courier time). We may take longer to process incomplete applications.
What if you and your partner are not married?
If you are a British man and your child's mother is foreign, you can apply for Consular birth registration only if the child was born on or after 1 July 2006.
If you are an unmarried woman who has had a child in Brazil whose father's name is not on the local birth certificate and you would like the father's details to be recorded on the British certificate, you will need to swear the declaration in front of a consular officer from the nearest post. Please fill in the following forms: paternity and maternity declarations and the domicile questionnaire.
